Watching my child grow from birth to his current age of four years old has been an eye-opener for me. I was fortunate to have a child who was able to teach me patience because my son Gavin has learning disabilities. At first I found this frustrating but my son needed me to approach things differently than the normal instance I believed that would have worked. I patiently did my research and went to seek out help from outside resources with the help of his mother. Applying the new techniques took time but I saw the growth in my child. Although it was slow process, his excitement and satisfaction at learning something new as well as seeing him applying it in his daily routine was well worth it. This accomplishment is what I want to see when I teach. I want to see the children’s eyes light up when I introduce the lesson plan. I want to see the anticipation on their faces when the wheels start turning in their heads. I have developed a personal teaching philosophy that will be implemented into my future classrooms because of what this experience with my son and my education at California State University Long Beach has given me. I am continually being prepared for the opportunity to take lead in my own classroom. I will look at the students’ needs and plan accordingly just as I do with my son.
One of my goals is to teach respect among each other and to learn to always help each other when needed. Our society is not just made of different ethnicity but now we have children who have certain disabilities ranging from ASD to ESL. I want the children to be able to see the differences but embrace in a positive manner. I believe a classroom that can get a long will thrive. It is all about the setting you place the children in to begin with. I want the children to share their learning experience with their classmates. Another goal of mine is to expand their knowledge of art. I want to give the children the freedom of expression and creativity. Each child is an unique individual and I want to provide a safe environment for the to showcase their potential. I want to be a great teacher who will always strive to do what’s best for the children.
Continuing my education and training at California State University Long Beach will help me reach my goal of becoming an art educator in California. I plan on getting accepted into the Single Subject Credential Program. Once accepted I can see myself completing all required coursework within two years. I will utilize not just the knowledge but the experience from student teaching to guide me in this career path I have chosen. This path is to obtain a position as a school teacher that will utilize my strong dedication to children’s development and to their educational needs. By doing this, I know I will accomplish my goals and be able to achieve great success in this field.
